From technological advancements to the loss of legendary figures, the past twelve months have been both transformative and poignant for our community.Honoring DJ Randall, MC Conrad, Jackmaster and Lennie De Ice The DJ world mourned the loss of DJ Randall, a pioneering figure whose influence spanned decades. Renowned for his seamless mixing and deep understanding of music, Randall’s legacy continues to inspire both seasoned DJs and newcomers alike. This was a particularly difficult year with the passing of MC Conrad and Scottish DJ, Jackmaster. Just recently, Lennie De Ice, producer of the genre defining ‘We Are IE’ also sadly passedVirtual Reality RevolutionThis year marked a major leap into virtual reality (VR) for DJing. Algoriddim expanded its popular djay app to the Apple Vision Pro platform, allowing DJs to perform in immersive virtual environments. This innovation enables users to manipulate 3D turntables and spatial audio effects using intuitive hand gestures, recreating the tactile experience of working with physical vinyl and hardware.Building on this momentum, Algoriddim introduced a version of the djay app for the Meta Quest. Despite the inevitable pushback from some corners of the DJ community, no one can deny what a turntable wizard, Algoriddim boss, DJ Angelo is and what a forward thinker he is. With full-sized jog wheels and an intuitive mixer section, the XDJ-AZ offers a seamless, professional experience for DJs. Features like CloudDirectPlay and StreamingDirectPlay integration further enhance its versatility, allowing direct access to rekordbox libraries and streaming services.AlphaTheta’s release of the DDJ-GRV6 was a highlight for DJs seeking flexibility and creativity in their performances. The standout feature, Groove Circuit, allowed live remixing by tweaking drum parts and adding effects, making it ideal for dynamic and engaging sets. The controller’s club-style layout, which featured large jog wheels, eight Performance Pads, and integrated Beat FX, offered a familiar experience for professional DJs. The Smart Rotary Selector enhanced track browsing with intuitive controls and included a Discover function to suggest tracks on the fly. Compatible with rekordbox on Mac/Windows as well as iOS/Android devices, the DDJ-GRV6 also boasted a sleek, ergonomic design with a matte black finish. It was a versatile tool for DJs looking to expand their creative potentialIn the realm of DJ headphones, AlphaTheta introduced the HDJ-F10 model, offering wireless freedom without compromising on sound quality. These innovations reflect a growing trend towards versatility and adaptability in DJ equipment, catering to diverse performance scenarios and expanding the possibilities for DJs worldwide.What to expect in 2025As we continue to navigate our way through the polycrisis of socio political upheaval, economic downturn and climate change, the DJ community is going to face more struggles and there is no sugar coating this sobering reality. The struggle for inclusivity for DJs and creatives is likely to become even more pronounced, as systemic inequalities and resource disparities are exacerbated by the challenges of our time. The rising cost of living, diminishing opportunities for grassroots venues, and the ongoing commodification of creative spaces threaten to push marginalized voices further to the fringes. Yet, within these struggles lies the potential for resilience and solidarity. The DJ community has always been a beacon of innovation, collaboration, and cultural exchange. By fostering inclusive spaces, advocating for equitable opportunities, and leveraging the transformative power of music, we can continue to build a scene that not only endures but thrives in the face of adversity.Our message is a message of hope. In the face of fascist tech titans and demagogue world leaders, it’s easy to lose hope, not to mention the horrific world events playing out on our screens.
