OTR had a chat with 4x DMC Champion, Prime Cuts. We talked about his career so far and the upcoming masterclasses where he will be a guest tutor. Read on to find out more….

Can you tell us a bit about your history as a DMC champion and member of the Scratch Perverts?

“We started the crew with a clear mission to enter competitions and hopefully win some titles. I was part of the four man team that made it to the ITF World Finals in Amsterdam where we battled the Beat Junkies from Los Angeles. The following year we won the first ever DMC World Team Championship in New York and my last team victory was as part of an international team The Perverted Allies alongside Craze, Infamous and Tony Vegas. Individually I’ve won the ITF World Scratching Championship twice, facing A-Trak in Hawaii and Excess in Los Angeles the following year. The competitions were a great way of gaining exposure back then as the media had a genuine interest in the scene and we were quite lucky in that regard. I managed to quit my day job and play clubs to sustain myself and continue to do so today.”

You’ve played at some of the biggest events across the globe, are there any events that you look back on as a milestone?

“I think the residency at Fabric is the greatest achievement in my DJ career, 15 years and 160 gigs at the club! We had an annual event called Beatdown at fabric and over the years had some incredible artists play; Jazzy Jeff, Diplo, Ian Brown, Andy C, Plan B, Dizzee Rascal, Benji B, Pendulum, the list goes on!Glastonbury dance tent playing between The Roots and The Streets also comes to mind.”

“I’ve been very lucky to have been on the line up with some real legends.”

Is there a personal favourite from your DJ sets?

“I couldn’t pick a single moment, it’s all a singular memory to me now! I still love the feeling of playing out, I don’t think that will ever leave me.”

You’re going to be guest tutor for the On the Rise DJ academy masterclasses on the 6th and 13th of February. What can attendees expect to experience and learn at these masterclasses?

“Obviously we will focus heavily on scratching! I hope to share some of the experiences I’ve had over the years. We will explore various aspects of DJing from playing clubs to building a mix and also look at how djing and production go hand in hand. I’m a fan of many styles of music and continue to love digging and discovering new beats, I think this hunger is key to being a good selector. If we have time we will also chat about social media and it’s role in music and DJing.”

Prime Cuts will be the guest tutor for the OTR Academy masterclasses on February 6th and 13th. You can grab your tix here.
