Globe trotting Palestinian DJ, Sama’ Abdulhadi is the guest on the Alpha Theta Equal Beats Podcast, episode seven.
So much of what it is to be a DJ focuses on the technical and performance side of things. But there’s more to being a DJ, there’s the well being side of things, community and longevity. Sama’ shares a ton of insights on the bigger picture of DJ life, here’s a few highlights:
Have a team you can trust- your booker, your logistics team, everyone you work with should be trustworthy.
Emotional Support- when your career involves frequent travelling and time spent alone, you need to have someone you can call for emotional support.
Master Your DJ Gear- use your DJ gear like an instrument. Beyond the transitions, learn to use your controller and mixer with the intricate knowledge of a saxophonist or pianist.
Health Is Wealth- watch out for burnout, get plenty of sleep and downtime which can be optimised by prepping for your gigs.
Support New Artists- take some time to do deep dives into your Promo lists and find those hidden gems from lesser known or new artists.
