SHERELLE on Jungle, Black British Music, and the Sound of the Summer

If you’ve spent any time on the dancefloor recently, you’ve probably noticed-jungle is having a moment (some would argue it never went away). For DJ and producer SHERELLE, it’s history, identity, and resistance all wrapped into rhythm and bass.

In a recent interview posted on the Refinery29 UK and R29 Unbothered IG pages, SHERELLE spoke about why jungle’s resurgence matters-and why it’s not going anywhere.

“Jungle is such an amazing genre,” she says. “It was created in the UK. A lot of the producers came from Caribbean backgrounds. They were sampling music close to their hearts-stuff their parents played at home.”

That deep connection to heritage, combined with raw sound system energy, is what made jungle one of the UK’s most powerful exports. Now in its 30s, it still speaks to new generations.

SHERELLE links jungle to the wider Black British sonic story—alongside UK Garage, Trip Hop, and more. Each one reflects real life, migration, struggle, and joy.

“The Black British experience is something so unique. And we’re lucky we’ve got music to help us understand it better,” she explains.

She also shouted out artists pushing the sound forward, including Tim Reaper-a leading name in the new wave of jungle producers.

SHERELLE’s message is clear: jungle isn’t nostalgia. It’s living culture. It’s fast, raw, and emotional. And it’s still evolving.
