I just stumbled upon Skiddle’s article on the best DJ mixes of all time. I came across some legendary sets such as Carl Cox’s 9hr Space, Ibiza set but one mix literally jumped out at me. That was ‘Brainfreeze’ by Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow.

Firstly, I felt a sense of shame and a dent in my ego, I asked myself how is it, I have never heard this set before? I grew up in the 90s and somehow, I missed this? Nevertheless, putting my dented pride to one side, I feel a deep dive is necessary as maybe some readers may also be unaware of this gem.

So, my initial thoughts- listening to this mix feels like a Tarantino movie!! So many dusty 45s, so many deep cuts. There is a tracklist as this was released as an album

Thing is, you may find some of these tunes on Spotify etc but you’re more likely to have to remortgage your house to buy the 7″ vinyls or ’45s’ from Discogs!!!

So, Who is Cut Chemist?

According to Allmusic, Cut Chemist is a Californian DJ and member of legendary Hip-Hop act, Jurassic 5. Red Bull Music Academy describes Chemist as ‘a key figure in pushing the boundaries of turntablism and DJ culture.’ DJ Tech Tools describes Cut as a high energy performer with dynamic stage presence and impeccable turntable skills.

So, Who is DJ Shadow?

DJ Shadow is a name that most have very likely heard of, a pioneer of instrumental Hip-Hop and sample based music according to AllMusic. Here’s what The Guardian has to say:

DJ Shadow’s distinctive style revolves around his ability to craft intricate sound collages, weaving together a diverse range of musical elements and genres. His innovative approach to sampling and his knack for creating atmospheric and cinematic compositions have garnered widespread recognition and influenced countless artists in the electronic and hip-hop scenes

So with the introductions out of the way, what do the music journos have to say about the album? Here’s a few quotes:

Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow’s Brainfreeze is a masterclass in turntablism, a jaw-dropping mix that pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with two turntables and a crate of records. – The Vinyl Factory

The energy and creativity displayed in Brainfreeze is unparalleled. Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow’s chemistry is evident throughout the mix, resulting in a captivating and infectious sonic experience. – DJ Mag

Brainfreeze is a sonic collage that takes listeners on a thrilling journey through different musical eras and genres, seamlessly mixing funk, soul, rock, and more. It’s a testament to the artistry and creativity of both DJs. – Red Bull Music Academy

While, I don’t feel in any way qualified to talk about the mix as any kind of expert, I can tell you how it feels to listen. ‘Sonic collage’ is a great descriptive, it really gets to the way the DJ’s literally drop the tunes in with scratch transitions and quick seamless fades  and the scratches!!!! They are quite simply amazing!!!

I mentioned Tarantino earlier (and I know he is a divisive figure) because I can’t help but get a feel of the director’s use of songs and even the fictional radio stations like ‘K-Billy’s Super Sounds of the ’70s’ especially when I hear the funny skits mixed into the tunes and songs that focus around ‘scratch’ and ‘slurp.’ It may well be down to all the fabulous Soul and Funk rarities that are peppered through this incredible set.

The DJ set comes in many forms and I love them all but there is something special about a scratch DJ/turntablist set that really showcases DJing as an art form. If this set was aa piece of classic art, I would have to compare it with one of my favourite classical artists, Salvador Dali, inventive, genius, mind bending and brilliant!! But that’s enough of my gushing, hit play on the links above and hear the art for yourself.
