Revisiting a 1990 DJ Hype Mix that every aspiring DJ needs to hear

Inspired by a Jerome Hill Instagram post, we decided to check out a 31 year old DJ Hype mix recorded on Fantasy FM. As Jerome mentions in his IG post

… It’s the set that pretty much began my obsession with ‘this music’..“The Future Is Ours” was recorded in 1990 by Dj Hype and was known then as a ‘studio mix’ as opposed to a recording from the radio of a rave, and it featured the top tier of the tracks he used to play on his Fantasy FM shows….

Anyone familiar with Hype knows about his incredible scratch DJing and there is plenty of that on display in this mix like the scratching into Meat Beat Manifesto ‘Babylon’ (did anyone spot this tune playing in the background on Sucession?). Primarily known as a Drum & Bass DJ nowadays, it’s an absolute treat to hear Hype cut up two Meat Beat Manifesto tunes back to back on the turntables like an absolute pro. It could also be argued that asides from Hip Hop, no other style of music suits the art of turntablism as well as the Proto-Hardcore Rave style of 1990- a mish mash of UK, European and US influenced Techno, House and Breakbeat music.

Jerome also provides the full tracklist for this mix in case you fancy hitting Discogs and bagging some oldskool vinyl, Be warned though, a ‘VG+’ copy of Mental Cube ‘Chile of the Bass Generation’ will set you back 27 Euros plus 14 Euros shipping! If you don’t fancy shelling out the big bucks for the vinyl, you owe it to yourself to listen to this seamless mix full of tunes that have inspired generations and still do!!!!
