The Liquid Dude is a veteran artist and award-winning filmmaker making a comeback with a new EP entitled ‘Can I Music?’, and it’s immediately clear this isn’t your typical release. This is raw, analogue and unapologetically experimental.
‘Shakyshaky’ parachutes us onto the floor of the disco, right under the glitterball for a nice soul drenched workout and a great mood lifter.
‘Freaking Freaks’ is somewhat NSFW in the best possible way – a hybrid of chopped up electro breaks, 303s and Rave melodies that feels chaotic and controlled at the same time. There’s a playfulness here that sets the tone for what’s to come.
‘Nipponacidfunk’ effectively does what it says on the tin. Beats straight from dusty 45s meet acid funk and cinematic 70s vibes all in one track. The fusion shouldn’t work on paper, but The Liquid Dude pulls it off with confidence and style, showing the kind of production chops that only come from years of experience.
‘Bootox Love’ leans fully into the electro motif, making it the DJs weapon of the release while retaining the funky acid style of the rest of the EP.
‘Digital Dopamine’ gets modular and tripped out, whilst ‘Indigestion’ traverses even further down the path of spaced out machine funk. These are tracks that reward repeated listens, revealing layers and details that aren’t immediately obvious on first pass. The early 90s Rave vibrations of ‘The Old Days’ complete the package perfectly, bringing things full circle with a nostalgic nod that never feels derivative.
What really stands out across the entire EP is the attention to detail and incredible sound design. The Liquid Dude has crafted something that will keep you coming back, discovering new elements each time. This is a keeper for sure, with great potential for a late night or early morning DJ set when you want something that’s cerebral without losing its groove.
