Label of the week: Souped Up Records

The record label plays an integral role in all forms of dance music. Labels are usually run by a DJ or artist or both in many cases. The label in essence is a brand extension and a mission statement of the owners musical vision.

Labels often form part of ‘dubplate culture’ offering the DJ a degree of exclusivity. This is particularly the case with Jungle and DnB partly due to the direct link to Dancehall Reggae and Hip Hop.

Souped Up Records is co owned by Serum and Benny V. The label is recognisable by its cartoonish artwork style and bassline driven style of DnB often referred to as ‘wobblers’ and due the loud snaking bass riffs.

The label features a roster of established and emerging talent including Voltage, Need For Mirrors and Rohaan. Our favourite Souped Up track? That has to the massive ‘Night Train’ by Teddy Killerz!
