You’ve a young talented DJ ready to turn your dream job into a reality. You’re excited and a little nervous, but you’re ready to make your mark. So, what do you do?

Well, first you need to learn the basics. This how-to guide will teach you everything you need to know about surviving (and thriving) in the club industry as a young DJ.

Do Your Research

Before you even think about stepping into a club as a DJ, you need to do your research.
Learn as much as you can about the nightclubs in your area. Find out who the key players are, and which clubs cater to your style of music. Get to know the owners and managers, and make sure you are familiar with the club’s policies and procedures.

If you’re not familiar with the club’s sound system or lighting setup, ask to see them in advance so you can plan your set accordingly. Make sure you have a good understanding of the club’s atmosphere and clientele so you can play music that will be appreciated by the crowd.

Above all, remember that it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Plan your set accordingly and make sure you are familiar with all the equipment you’ll be using.

Get to Know the Promoters

When you’re starting, it’s important to get to know the promoters. The promoters are the people who put on the events, and they can be a great source of information and networking opportunities. Get to know them and learn what they’re looking for in a DJ.

Promoters typically have their networks of DJs that they work with, so it’s essential to make a good impression on them. They can be a great ally in your quest to make it in the club industry. Know your worth and watch out for ‘red flags’ such as offers to play for ‘exposure’ (shorthand for doing a free gig).

Start Small and Work Your Way Up

You’re not going to make it as a resident DJ overnight. It takes time, effort, and a lot of hard work. Start by playing at local venues and work your way up to larger ones.

DJing at smaller clubs will allow you to develop your skills and make mistakes without putting too much pressure on yourself. It will also help you build a fanbase of loyal supporters who will be there for you when you make it big.

Be Professional

It’s always important to be professional. This means showing up on time, bringing the right equipment and/or making sure your set list is backed up via USB or through Rekordbox etc. It also means being polite and respectful to everyone you meet, from your fellow DJs to the club staff to the customers.

Remember, you’re not the only DJ there – plenty of other people are trying to make a living doing what you’re doing. So, act like a professional, and you’ll be more likely to get ahead in this competitive industry.

Be a pro, not a pushover. You may have read the about the recent incident at the Ministry of Sound regarding a headliner DJ refusing to leave the booth, costing two DJs their gigs for the night. If this happens to you, take it up with management in a respectful manner but remember, you DO have a right to be treated respectfully and no one should try to sabotage your set. Don’t be tempted to pass such an incident off thinking it will harm your career if you speak up.

Be Prepared for Rejection

You’re going to face a lot of rejection, and you’ll need to be able to take it in your stride. Remember, it’s not always about you. There are plenty of other DJs out there, and the club industry is a competitive place.
If you want to make it in the club scene, you need to be able to work hard and take criticism. Keep your head down and focus on your craft. Success will eventually come if you’re patient and persistent.

Be Humble

No matter how good you become, always remember that you are never too good to learn from others. Be humble in your approach and be willing to take advice from other DJs, promoters, and club owners. You never know who might have something valuable to teach you. Just be sure to avoid toxic promoters and DJs who try and take advantage of you.
