Sheffield’s Gut Level is more than just a music venue—it’s a heartbeat for the city’s queer community and a haven for underrepresented voices in dance music. Since opening its doors in 2019, this queer-led DIY space has championed LGBTQIA+ individuals, women, and gender minorities, creating a safe and inclusive environment for creativity to flourish. Through club nights, workshops, and communal gatherings, Gut Level has built a vibrant culture rooted in authenticity and solidarity.

In November 2024, the significance of Gut Level was captured in a collaborative documentary project by Thirdspace and White Teeth, an audiovisual art duo known for documenting Sheffield’s untold stories. The film dives into the essence of Gut Level, not just as a physical space, but as a symbol of resilience and expression for its community. White Teeth’s lens, already celebrated at platforms like Tate Liverpool and DocFest, paints an intimate picture of the people who breathe life into this venue, ensuring their voices are seen and heard.

This documentary isn’t just about Gut Level—it’s about what spaces like it represent in today’s cultural landscape. In a world that too often sidelines queer narratives, Gut Level and its story stand as a powerful reminder of the importance of community-driven initiatives. It’s a celebration of creativity, inclusivity, and the transformative power of a space where everyone feels they belong.
