Much of the history of the UK dance music scene is in cassette format and sorely in need of archivists. Sonz of a cassette tape era (a reference to Dan Donnelly’s Son’Z of a loop da’ loop era alias) is a new blog, archiving the sets of DJs from the early 90s on Soundcloud.

As is to be expected, many of these sets suffer from the wear and tear of an old format but the sound quality isn’t necessarily important. For some, the warped audio and muddy sound quality adds to the overall aesthetic.

What makes these digitised tapes worth listening to is the window it opens into the rave scene prior to the Criminal Justice Act of 1994. You can listen to long lost sets by Colin Dale, Trevor Rockliffe, Grooverider along with rare sets from lesser known DJs of the era. Updates are regular and this looks to be a promising resource for digging into Rave history!
