Cunning continues his series of interviews, this time with DnB legend, Nookie

Nookie is a DJ, producer, label owner and engineer. His journey into music came from his family’s love for Soul/Jazz-Funk and his own love of Electro and Hip Hop.

Influenced by the DMC championships, Nookie got hold of some Technics 1200s and practised scratch DJ’ing. Working in various record shops further broadened his musical influences particularly when DJs like Norman Jay, Fabio and Grooverider came in to buy vinyl.

Nookie traces Jungle/DnB back to the early US Hip House records which UK DJs sped up and manipulated to make their own sound of Hardcore, Jungle and later DnB.

The name of Nookie’s label, Daddy Armhouse came from his studio partner, Pedro based on the influx of nameless white labels coming into their record shop. A box set of tracks has been remastered and repressed on the Kniteforce Revolution, currently available to purchase.

Nookie talks about the reverse situation of not getting so many gigs due to being a producer as opposed to today. The conversation move’s to Nookie’s favourite personal productions and the more musical strain of Jungle that grew out of 1994.

Nookie also produces under the alias Binary State, an outlet for his Techno leaning productions and continues to produce under his better known name, one example being this remix below

You can listen to the full interview in the video above, the We Are Hardcore podcast is also available on all good streaming platforms.
